Root canal treatment

Root canal treatment is a procedure used to treat infection or inflammation within the inner part of a tooth, helping relieve discomfort and preserve your natural tooth.

When the nerve and blood supply inside a tooth become damaged or infected, often due to deep decay, a crack or trauma, your dentist may recommend root canal treatment. During the procedure, the affected tissue and bacteria are carefully removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected, and the tooth is sealed to prevent further infection.

Depending on the tooth and the complexity of the treatment, root canal treatment may require more than one appointment. Following treatment, a crown may be recommended to help protect and strengthen the tooth, particularly when a significant amount of tooth structure has been lost.

Signs that a tooth may require root canal treatment can include:
-
Persistent or severe toothache
-
Sensitivity to hot or cold
-
Pain when biting or chewing
-
Swelling or tenderness around the tooth
-
Discolouration of the tooth
-
A recurring pimple or swelling on the gum
